CELEBRATION OF THE LIZARD

A lot was riding on The Celebration of the Lizard. It was the working title of the third Doors album (as was also American Nights, a title written on the cover of Jim’s big ledger notebook.) Jim wanted the album jacket printed in pseudosnakeskin, the title embossed in gold foil. “Celebration” was actually a collection of poems and lyrics compiled over the past three years, woven into an outlaw ballad about the epic journey of the Lizard King and his young companions across an empty and monumental desert. The classically cadenced “Lions in the street and roaming dogs in heat” stanza opened what Jim was calling a “theater composition.” The Lizard King leaves the body of his mother rotting in the summer ground and begins the journey. He wakes in a green hotel with an oozing reptilian creature groaning beside him. The stanza ends with the invocation:

Is everybody in? The ceremony is about to begin.
